На вечеринке на роскошной вилле Клаттербаков Бакши допускает 1001 оплошность. Он падает с крыши в бассейн, и его спасает Мишель Моне, начинающая актриса, которую слишком предприимчивый – и вежливо отвергнутый – продюсер тоже грозит уволить со съемок. Юная дочь Клаттербаков появляется во главе целой банды молодежи и приводит с собой слоненка, чья кожа расписана лозунгами протеста. Бакши считает, что эти надписи несовместимы со священным характером животного, и готовится смыть их. Вся банда участвует в этой затее: мыльная пена постепенно заполняет собой весь дом. Со стен снимают драгоценные картины. Музыканты продолжают играть, наполовину погруженные в пену. Гости вперемешку со слугами и цыганами пускаются в безудержную пляску по всей территории виллы. С хозяйкой приключается нервный срыв, и ее уносят на носилках. На рассвете Бакши отвозит Мишель домой на своем трехколесном «моргане».► Лучший фильм Блейка Эдвардза и Питера Селлерза. Самая удачная и смешная комедия из тех, что нам довелось увидеть за последние 20 лет. Блейк Эдвардз возрождает старые традиции бурлеска – искусства, в эпоху немого кинематографа основанного на непрерывной последовательности неловкостей и катастроф, принимающих все более гигантские пропорции, – и обогащает их новыми козырями: цветом, роскошью и весьма искусной режиссурой, неторопливой и завораживающей, словно во сне. Гэги присутствуют в изобилии и срабатывают эффективно; им не обязательно быть оригинальными, чтобы добиться совершенства. На них работают 3 основных элемента. Во-первых, до крайности сочная игра Питера Селлерза в роли кроткого индуса, необычайно любознательного, инфантильного, но при этом – пугающе надоедливого и склонного к разрушениям. Комическая природа этого персонажа обладает ощутимой двойственностью. Он напрашивается на симпатии зрителя уже потому, что прибыл издалека, покинув родную страну. При этом мы следим за ним не без некоторого садизма, предвкушая новые бедствия, которые вызовет эта ходячая катастрофа, напоминающая персонаж мультфильма. На 2-м месте следует отметить силу гэгов, удесятеренную утонченной режиссурой, использующей длинные планы и все возможности уникальной декорации, замкнутого помещения со множеством укромных уголков. Для героя они превратятся в настоящую полосу препятствий. Наконец, эти гэги приобретают дополнительную выразительность в сухой, эгоистичной, отстраненной атмосфере званого приема. Большинство оплошностей, допущенные героем, прочие гости либо не замечают вовсе, либо обнаруживают в последний момент. Точно так же, как декорация дома, где проходит прием, становится сама по себе немым социальным комментарием, характеризующим персонажей и дух голливудских «тусовок», ход самой вечеринки иронично выражает изобразительными средствами обстановку безразличия к ближнему, благопристойного лицемерия, которые определяют в этом мире поведение каждого обитателя. Заключительная фирменная черта Блейка Эдвардза: фильм заканчивается великолепной и потешной сценой, визуально напоминающей сон или бред. В самом деле, Блейк Эдвардз всегда стремится к тому, чтобы в финале его фильмов сатира преобразилась в некое чарующее сновидение. -
